The MD650 was most famously employed in twin configuration in the Deutsche Bahn V200 locomotives and the British Railways ‘Warships’ (Classes 42/43) but was rated 980hp for the single engine use in the ‘baby’ Metrovicks. Fast to accelerate and powerful, the design proved to be maintenance heavy and complicated to use, leading CIÉ to return to GM to make a deal for new engines to repower the A and C Class fleets. The two Maybachs soldiered on to the end of the 1970s, with 233 emerging with its new EMD 645 in August 1980. It was taken out of service just under five years later and was scrapped at Vic Berry, Leicester, in August 1990.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3957/0801/files/2026.10.13AccurascaleBClassB233CIEBlack_Maybach_565686e5-c75f-49e1-961e-0188847d8803.jpg?v=1792567019
