Possibly inspired by developments across the Irish Sea a small yellow warning panel was later introduced to some examples of the class painted in the all-black livery, including C223. Although austere the livery did at least include the new CIÉ roundel. Notably it was one of ten members of the fleet with C203/208/213/215/217/218/226/228/231 that had bufferbeam-mounted jumper boxes fitted as an experiment in the late 1950s to provide electricity for train lighting on specially-equipped carriages in branch line service. While their use was short lived, the equipment usually survived until the locomotives received their GM ‘transplant’, which happened for this example in July 1972. After 14 years mostly dedicated to Dublin suburban services it lasted almost to the end of the C201 class operations on CIÉ, being withdrawn in September 1986, although it had been stored a few months earlier. In was cut up in October 1992 at Inchicore.
