Supertrain-liveried 225 is notorious among Irish railway modellers of a certain age thanks to being chosen by manufacturer Lima to join its catalogue in the 1970s… it’s just a shame it was applied to the company’s BR Class 33 ‘Crompton’ model! The real 215 emerged from the Inchicore re-engining programme in July 1971 and was immediately revitalised, it’s new 1,100hp engine being well suited to a much wider range of duties than when it was built. The rebuilds came just in time to take over Dublin suburban services from the even older 2600-series railcars that were increasingly impossible to keep in working order and 215 was finally withdrawn from these trains with the arrival of the new Linke-Hoffman-Busch 8100 Class EMUs in the mid 1980s. It didn’t work after January 1985 and was officially withdrawn in September 1986. It was cut up in the UK at Vic Berry, Leicester.
