Terminé près de six ans après que le D6700 ait quitté Vulcan Foundary, le D6600 a été le premier des neuf Type 3 électriques anglais à être numéroté dans le désordre alors que la flotte dépassait sa série allouée et se heurtait aux locomotives Western Regions D7000 "Hymek". Livré au 86A Cardiff Canton en août 1965, puis à Swansea Landore en 1971, gagnant plus tard le numéro 37300, il a passé les 20 premières années de sa vie principalement sur les droits de fret dans et autour du sud du Pays de Galles avant de finalement déménager en Ecosse au début de 1985 Il s'était à peine installé au nord de la frontière lorsqu'il a reçu l'appel de Crewe Works en octobre pour une remise à neuf en tant que l'un des Class 37/4 basés au Pays de Galles, 37429.
