Barrier Wagons
Born from the need to repurpose surplus HEA coal hoppers in the late 1980s, the distinctive RNA "cut-down" barrier wagon is a fascinating piece of modern railway history. British Rail created these unique vehicles by stripping away the main upper hopper body, leaving behind the signature angled support framework and plating over the floor. Their primary mission was to serve as essential safety buffers on nuclear flask trains, marshalled directly between the locomotive and the hazardous cargo. With their highly visible, exposed chassis details and utilitarian appearance, these cut-down hoppers provide the perfect excuse to add some unique character and essential operational realism to any late-BR or sectorisation-era fleet.
