Illustrating the final condition of many of the 201 Class Metrovicks in the 1980s is 227s, which has lost its staff snatchers – although retaining two of the retaining plates – and gained overhead warning flashes for working under the wires on the new Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) network. Released from its GM conversion at Inchicore in October 1971 in the ‘black & tan’ scheme, it retained this livery longer than most being recorded in 1976 still in this paint. The new Supertrain image suited it well though and it was eventually stored by CIÉ in December 1985. The locomotive was one of several to be transferred to NIR ownership in 1986 and it gained the operator’s blue livery and the new number 106. It had the distinction of being the last of the 34 ‘C Class’ in traffic being stopped by NIR in March 1995, after which it was sold into preservation and moved to Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, where it was repainted back to silver with the number C202. Unfortunately it was vandalised and suffered arson damage at this location after which it was moved several times with the intention of being restored. However this never got off the ground and the empty shell of the MV was scrapped in 2025.
